The future of photography is not determined by the medium itself, but by artificial intelligence. IoT image generators internalise the photographic visual language and can synthesise it to create “promptography”. What relationship does this generate between photography and promptography? What skills do I need as a photographer and what skills do I need as a “promptographer”? Where do they complement each other and where do they compete with each other? Boris Eldagsen analyses a relationship that most would describe as extremely complex, while at the same time showing where this relationship may evolve in the future.

Boris Eldagsen studied fine arts at the art academies of Mainz, Prague and Hyderabad, and philosophy at the universities of Cologne and Mainz.

As a university lecturer, photographer and digital media researcher, he can be considered one of the experts in the field of DI in German photography. He is head of the DFA’s digital service and member of the DGPh.

In April 2023, Boris declined the Sony World Photography (Open Category/Creative) Award after admitting that he had submitted a DI-generated photograph to the competition – in order to initiate a discussion about DI-generated images in photography. The stunt became a worldwide news story and his image ELEKTRIKAS one of the most famous of the year.
