On October 31st at Zalgirio Arena, Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra and Kaunas – European Capital of Culture will host a Requiem by Andrew Lloyd Webber, one of the most famous contemporary composers and winner of the prestigious Grammy Award for music.

Together with the Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra, the audience will see a large number of well-known performers, including tenor Edgaras Montvidas, who has appeared on the most important concert and opera stages, Kseniya Bakhritdinova-Kravchuk, a soloist of the National Opera of Ukraine, the powerful-sounding Kaunas State Choir and the Kaunas Boys’ Choir Varpelis, and the role of the disc jockey will be performed by the young soloist Teodoras Lipčius, who is renowned for his work in music projects.

A.L. Webber’s Requiem premiered in New York in 1985, with Plácido Domingo and Sarah Brightman in the lead solo roles. For the author of many popular musicals, it was a new challenge to create a piece of traditional classical music. This Requiem mixes Webber’s melodic and popular music-oriented style with more complex, sophisticated and sometimes even austere forms. In 1986, Webber’s Requiem won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Classical Composition, and the hymn ‘Pie Jesu’ was a worldwide hit and has been recorded by numerous artists.
