J Balvin – „Mi Gente“:

Born José Álvaro Osorio Balvín in Medellín, Colombia’s second-largest city after Bogotá, and known professionally as J Balvin, he is arguably Colombia’s most popular singer today. Often hailed as the prince of reggaeton music, J Balvin is one of the world’s biggest-selling Latin artists. It is estimated that he has sold more than 35 million records. As you know, other prominent Latin music stars Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias and Shakira only found worldwide success after recording albums in English. J Balvin, while collaborating with many English-speaking artists, continues to sing almost exclusively in Spanish and hopes to bring Spanish-language music to a wider global audience.

J Balvin – “Safari” (ft. Pharrell Williams, BIA, Sky):

J Balvin has won eleven Billboard Latin Music Awards, six Latin Grammy Awards, five MTV Video Music Awards, seven Latin American Music Awards and has been nominated for four Grammy Awards. He was named “Best Contemporary Latin Songwriter of the Year” at the 2017 BMI Latin Awards for his contribution to the Latin music industry, and won the first Global Icon Award at the Lo Nuestro Awards for his contribution to the promotion of Latin music worldwide. In 2017, J Balvin became the first Latin American to headline the global music festivals Coachella, Tomorrowland and Lollapalooza. In 2017, the Guinness Book of World Records recognised him as “the leader of the second generation reggaeton revolution”. In 2020, J Balvin was nominated for a record number of Latin Grammy Awards, with as many as 13 nominations.

In 2012, J Balvin re-released his debut album and signed with Capitol Latin, a division of Universal Records, the world’s largest record label. J Balvin’s biggest success came in early 2014 with the release of the single “6 AM”, co-recorded with Puerto Rican singer Farruko. The hit, which became extremely popular, reached number 43 and then number 1 on the Billboard Latin Airplay charts. Soon after, J Balvin’s album ‘La Familia’ reached number 10 on Billboard’s list of the most popular Latin albums and stayed there for a total of 122 weeks.

Shortly afterwards, J Balvin released his second track “Ay Vamos” in the United States, which established his name in the Latin American market and won him his first Latin Grammy Award for Best Urban Song. The music video for this song is one of the most watched Latin music videos of all time, with more than one billion views. Buoyed by this success, J Balvin has recorded highly successful versions of songs with world-famous stars Justin Bieber (‘Sorry’), Ariana Grande (‘The Way’ and ‘Problem’), Robin Thicke (‘Blurred Lines’), Maroon 5 (‘Maps’) and Prince Royce (‘Stuck On A Feeling’). In 2020, J Balvin was nominated for a record 13 Latin Grammy Awards.

J Balvin – „Ay Vamos“:

J Balvin started 2016 with a bang with the release of Ginza, a huge Latin hit, which Rolling Stone magazine said “Ginza is the best three minutes in the history of reggaeton music”. The music video for the song broke the record for the most views of a Latin music video in the first 24 hours – more than 2 million. In June of the same year, J Balvin released his second studio album, Energia, with the hits “Bobo”, “Safari” and “Sigo Extranandot”.

J Balvin – “Ginza”:

In the summer of 2017, he released his most successful hit to date, “Mi Gente”, a collaboration with French DJ Willy William. Just a couple of months after its release, “Mi Gente” topped the Global Top 50 hits list of the music listening platform Spotify, and the song’s video views surpassed the 1 billion mark on YouTube. A remixed version of the song, recorded with American singer Beyoncé, was released shortly afterwards, helping Mi Gente to reach number three on the US chart.

J Balvin, Willy William – “Mi Gente” (ft. Beyoncé):

In 2018, the third studio album Vibras was released, featuring two hit songs Machika and Ahora. Thanks to them, Vibras broke the record for the most streams in 24 hours on music platforms. J Balvin described the sound of the record as “33% dancehall, 33% R&B and 33% reggaeton”. “The real aim of the album was to show what is happening with Spanish music that is becoming global – the rhythms we create are so amazing that you don’t even need to understand what we are singing about, you just love the songs”.

J Balvin, Jeon, Anitta – “Machika”:

In the summer of 2019, J Balvin unexpectedly released Oasis, an album recorded with Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny, which reached the Top 10 best-sellers in the United States. In the same year, J Balvin attended the Super Bowl of the American Football League (NFL) as an exclusive guest, performing a spectacular show with singers Jennifer Lopez and Shakira during the half-time show. In 2020, he released his fourth solo album ‘Colores’, with artwork and music videos by Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. In 2021, Balvin released his fifth studio album ‘José’. Later that year, J Balvin collaborated with the metal titans Metallica on a remix of the Metallica song “Wherever I May Roam”, which was released on the album “The Metallica Blacklist”. J Balvin closed 2021 with “Una Nota”, a hit with Dua Lipa.

J Balvin, Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny, Tainy – “Un Dia (One Day)”:

In March 2022, J Balvin released two singles with Ed Sheeran. The popular British musician said that he met J Balvin at a gym in New York, they had lunch, coffee and tea together later that day, and then met in a recording studio. This led to the two songs “Sigue” and “Forever My Love”. Ed Sheeran said that “learning Spanish was a real challenge and I had a lot of fun doing it”. J Balvin said: “I wanted Ed Sheeran to come into the world of reggaeton music and he invited me into his – it was really cool to hear Ed singing in Spanish”. Since then, there have been unconfirmed rumours that J Balvin and Ed Sheeran have recorded more than two songs, which may be released as a separate album in 2024.
