Kauno kantata

An extraordinary, immersive musical experience created especially for Kaunas and the people who love it. Composer Philip Miller (South Africa) and visual artist Jenny Kagan (Great Britain) invite you to find yourself in a maze of music and video images in the Zalgirio Arena, where you can choose which sound or artist to listen to and which image to watch.

This immersive work was created in collaboration with Lithuanian performers of various genres – the cantata will be performed by soloists Rafailas Karpis, Agnė Stančikaitė, Steponas Zonys, Tshegofatso Moeng (PAR), performers of the folklore ensembles Babadag, Ainiai, Ratilėlis, the Kaunas Symphony Orchestra, and the Kaunas State Chorus, The Kaunas Wind Orchestra Ąžuolynas, the VMU students’ string quartet, the VMU choir “Vivere Cantus”, the choir of the Sacred Music School “Cantores David”, the Juozas Naujalis Music Gymnasium students’ choir, the choirs “Cantate Domino” and “Gintaras”, and the readers Bella Shirin and Violeta Rakauskaite-Shtrom. The project was also joined by the Klezmer Orchestra from Seine (Poland). Directed by Chris Baldwin (Great Britain/Bulgaria).

The work is inspired by personal testimonies, memories and the rich and multifaceted sound world of Kaunas residents. The authors ask: what does it mean to look into the face of the “other” and come face to face with oneself, face to face with one’s humanity? In this project, music and songs are the means to create communion and find connections between painful stories, to establish a new relationship with a contradictory history.

“In the cantata we hear many voices. We listen to songs in different languages and in different spaces. Here we encounter moments of harmony and dissonance, cacophony and silence. And moments when sound becomes one”, says composer Philip Miller. His works are also currently featured in William Kentridge’s exhibition “What We Don’t Remember” in Kaunas.

The work will be listened to while walking, but seating will be available for people with mobility problems. The duration of the work is 1 hour.
