J. Kander “Chicago”

2-act musical performed in Lithuanian

Libretto by Fred Ebb, Bob Fosse
Songwriter: Fred Ebb

The second longest-running musical in Broadway history, Chicago (1975) is a musical satire of criminal justice, based on the play by reporter Maureen Dallas Watkins (1926), about two killers seeking attention and recognition. The musical is steeped in sexuality and irony. To be famous is an aspiration. No matter where you go or what you do, the meaning of your life is to be a shining star. Your performance is spun as a show, a video or another sensational joke. It’s a life for the front page, the headline, the glitter, the walk of fame. Therefore, nothing is sacred and all means are good. Existence is self-balancing in the search for the next intrigue. The curious thing is that people tend to adore such “criminal luminaries”, to justify them, to make ideals of them. The musical takes a satirical look at the notion of justice with which the players of this “theatre” become hostages to the show’s existence. In the musical Chicago, the criminal quest for justice in the city of Chicago in the 1930s intertwines with the stylish sexuality of the convicts and turns the prison walls into a starry hill – a show of justice where there are rules.

The musical Chicago (directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse), first produced on Broadway in 1975, won six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and a Grammy.
